A Long in Coming Talk

Somewhere in Kits, there's a Game sprite leading her brother-in-law into her apartment through the garage/Bar.

"Here we are, sprout. Why don't you have a seat and I'll go get Ana?"

"Okay."

He sits on the sofa and forces himself to relax, at least physically, leaning back and stretching his legs out.

Once Enzo's seated, AndrAIa disappears into the bedroom, returning shortly with an armful of daughter and Frisket at her heels. Once the canine spots Enzo, though, he makes a beeline for him, stubbed tail wagging excitedly.

Enzo's face breaks into its first genuine smile thus far as he sees baby and dog.

"Hey, Frisket! I missed you, boy!" Enzo makes with the skritches.

Frisket wuffs happily nosing and sniffling at Enzo as AndrAIa settles opposite them.

"He's certainly missed you."

"You been taking good care of Ana?" Enzo demands of the dog.

Frisket, for the most part, looks as affronted as a canine can. If course he's been taking good care of her! What does he think he is? Some regular street dog?

"That's what I thought."

He looks up at last, doing his best to focus on the baby and not her mother. "Hey, Ana!"

Ana squalls happily at the sight of her uncle Enzo, immediately making grabby hands for him.

AndrAIa laughs at this, offering Ana to Enzo with a smile.

"Looks like Frisket isn't the only one who missed you."

Enzo's smile goes sixteen times sappier as he gathers the infant into his arms. "Right back at you," he murmurs.

Ana just burbles, promptly shoving one of Enzo's digits into her mouth as soon as she's settled.

"So," AndrAIa begins with a bit of hesitation. "Talking."

The smile drains from Enzo's face. "Yeah."

He cuddles the baby, keeping his eyes locked on her, using her as a shield.

"I'm... not even ^sure what to say."

Might be why AndrAIa brought Ana out. Something for Enzo to keep his mind on.

"You can start with why you're as jumpy as a GOTO command."

[a1enzo]

Deep breath. "You know I... I've always..."

[notascreensaver]

She gives him a look which is both concerned and pitying.

"I'm afraid you'll have to lay things right out here."

[a1enzo]

He squeezes his eyes shut for a moment. Then, finally, he looks straight at her.

"I love you."

[notascreensaver]

The Game sprite lets out a sigh, running her hand over her hair.

"You can't love me, Sprout. Not like that. I'm married, and you have Dani."

[a1enzo]

"I ^know, and I love her too, I ^love her with all my code, it hurts when she's not a^round I love her so much. But I still love you, too." He blinks rapidly. "Sometimes I think it's the same thing."

Her voice softens further as she looks over at Enzo. She really wishes she didn't have to break his heart, but... "Enzo...you're like a brother to me."

[a1enzo]

He looks down again, focusing on the baby until the pang passes. It's nothing he didn't know, he accepted it long ago, but it still hurts to hear.

"I know. You don't... I don't think you get it. I love you, but... I don't want you." That sounds wrong. "I mean, I wouldn't want to... even if I did have a chance, I wouldn't... I mean, you're with Matrix, and I love that! And I'm with Dani, and that's enough for me, it really is! I'm happy with how things are!"

Ah. That. She's used to having people mooning after her from afar, but this, this was different. And awkward.

"I...think I understand. You love me, but it's not platonic. But you're happy to have things stay as they are."

[a1enzo]

"I wouldn't change them even if I could."

[notascreensaver]

She smiles a little.

"I think we've reached an understanding, then."

[a1enzo]

He nods.

"Nothing's changed, okay? I mean, I've felt this way for ages, it's nothing new, a-and everything was fine before. The only thing different is, well, the upgrade..."

He blushes, but he finally lets his eyes travel down the wonderful length of her and back up, just to make the point.

"Just don't be to overt about it," she responds as a warning. "Or else Matrix'll actually catch on, and that may get unpleasant."

[a1enzo]

Enzo barks a laugh. "You think?"

[notascreensaver]

"I do," she states with mock seriousness. "I may just have to stop him from deleting you."

[a1enzo]

"I hope you can, if it comes to that. Seriously, this is totally our secret. That means you, too, Frisket."

Frisket just snorts. He's never understood the point of mating for life to begin with, but it seems to make them happy.

[notascreensaver]

"My lips are sealed, Sprout," she agrees. "Won't tell a soul."

[a1enzo]

"Thanks."

He smiles at her. Now that she knows, she can probably see that the smile contains more than just gratitude, and always has done.

The smile falters before settling again, slightly different. "While we're at it, could I ask you a favour?"

That gets a raised eyebrow, especially at the sudden seriousness.

"What is it, Enzo?"

[a1enzo]

Serious, but not bad by any means.

"Could you bring me here more often? To see Ana?" He lifts the baby slightly.

[notascreensaver]

"Sure," she responds, looking down at her daughter. "Any particular reason why? Or just 'cause?"

[a1enzo]

After a moment's hesitation: "Both."

[notascreensaver]

"And the reason?" she prompts.

[a1enzo]

"Because she's yours and Matrix's. Because I'm allowed to love her." He swallows. "Because she's got my code, even if it didn't come from me. I'm not going to stop seeing her, Megabyte or no Megabyte."

[notascreensaver]

"Alright then," she responds with a smile. "There's been worse family setups, I'm sure."

[a1enzo]

"Thanks. Say, once a second?"

[notascreensaver]

A nod.

"Sounds reasonable."

[a1enzo]

"Alphanumeric."
